Always a set of instructions is given to the patient before surgery. These instructions may vary according to the procedure, the patient is advised to follow the instructions.
They may include the following:
It is very important to stop smoking 24 hours before for a hair transplant. Smoking can affect wound healing and may even affect your recovery, so stopping or temporarily quitting before your surgery is very beneficial.
Do not take alcohol in the three days before your hair transplant. It is better if you drink your last alcoholic a week before your surgery.
Hair is not cut before your surgery. It is important to let the donor area grow so that it is sufficient for transplantation. Plus it will cover the stitches after your hair transplant.
Massage your scalp about a week or two before your hair transplant. If possible, do this for at least 10 minutes per day or up to a maximum of 30 minutes. This will help soften the skin and improve skin tone. It will also receive blood flowing to that area.
You will need to take medication such as minoxidil before your hair transplant, it also depends on the degree of your hair loss. This may not be necessary if surgery is limited to the top of your head. You may be advised to take antibiotics to prevent the risk of infection. These can also be determined after the operation.
If you are over a certain age, for example, some clinics 45 and above may already have to undergo ECG-like tests. Also, you may have a blood test.
Stop taking any anti-inflammatory two weeks before your hair transplant.
Avoid taking antidepressants, beta-blockers, and blood-thinning drugs two weeks before surgery. Take advice and medicines from your doctors for problems like fever, headache, etc.
Stop taking any multi-vitamin/mineral supplement or herbal supplement two weeks before Hair transplant.
What happens after Hair transplant?
After your hair transplant, it is a good idea to read books and work for some time. There will be pain due to swelling in your head, so give yourself time to recover from it and allow the treated area to heal.
As with hair transplant, it depends on which method will be used. There is more than one technique for transplanting hair and these are discussed individually in our Hair Transplant Surgery section.
